As a user who owned the Tomtom Go 520 satnav, here are some comparison pros and cons between them:
1. Both of their route suggestion also not perfect. While using within London area, I think Tomtom got a slightly more precise road and junction turning instruction. Got several time Garmin suggest turning while in ahead-only junction (e.g. the road near Oval turing right to Brixton road, which is not allowed).
2. Tomtom interface is slightly more clean and easy to cope with, good for people who want straight-forward or lesser customizing experience; Garmin instead has more customizable function and interface, that will helpful for people who need extra info and custom purpose interface.
3. Garmin has extra function like weather forecast, road/motorway CCTV live update, POI suggestions and recommendation by TripAdvisor/FourSquare, it is sometime useful (or just useless fancy if you prefer access these through your smartphone)
4. Live traffic, Tomtom prediction seems slightly better and up-to-date. Garmin still do a not-bad job. With your smartphone mobile data turn on, Tomtom live traffic access works by turn on extra function “bluetooth with internet access” in your smartphone (based on my android 8.1 smartphone), Garmin traffic instead will work by just turn on the basic bluetooth.
5. Satnav windshield mount, TomTom magnetic charging mount is better than Garmin, more easy to mount/unmount the unit. Suction mechanism also feels better build quality.
6. Voice control, TomTom is better. It is very personal, for me I need several trial to trigger Garmin voice control, but TomTom just easy and always work without issue.
7. POI input, Garmin better. TomTom have to rely on the web-based POI import to sync the POI to the machine, but that function sometime failed (it was broken for 2 months before and TomTom get lots of complain if you look at their forum). Garmin just simply copy-and-paste the poi file into the device through normal USB cable and it will works.
8. Map refresh speed during driving, TomTom better. Garmin map refreshing speed not as fast as tomtom, but still very acceptable.
9. Warm and caring function, TomTom will rasise and ask if you want to go home when the device is turn on at night outside your home location. Garmin will show nearby sight seeing interest/restaurants/gas station/supermarket suggestion once you drive close to a new town.
Both of them have their special function, choose the one that you like 😉

I like the voice recognition, just takes a little time remembering the menu selection. Connected easily to the I-phone and works surprisingly well for me. Would like the odd additional vehicle graphic (simple ones for me). Battery seems to be excellent, lasts very well out of the car.

Always uses convoluted routes, and the speed limit for most of the 20 mph roads are incorrect.
However, the display quality is impressive.

I liked the garmin very much..i travelled from the UK over to Holland and found the garmin very easy and useful to use… the only slight irksome problem was fitting the garmin to its bracket in my car.. this I found fiddly..so I give it 9 1/2 out of 10..

I like the look and response of the screen. Set it up with my android smartphone app easily. First time I’ve had a sat nav with voice recognition and it responds quite well. As a delivery driver I have favourite locations saved and when I set this up on my laptop I’d backed up the last garmin I had and then restored these onto this and that was a bonus, using voice I simply say “ok garmin” “favourites” then either the name I have or as a list pops up on screen I can say “up” or “down” and as each is numbered 1-5 on each screen I just say which number etc. Its simple to use and looks really good. Traffic on the one i got is updated via power cable but you can get more accurate via smartphone being connected to it and having data on. I’m happy I chose this one. Perfect for my van delivery job.

works just fine, it does get a little hot when in use but Garmin say its fine, other than that its perfect

It got me in and out of central London wihtout issues but the battery life is poor and the user interface is bad news most of the time. My previous sat nav was a cheap Garmin and it was truly awful- it made me resolve never to buy Garmin again. But after seeing the reviews for the current TomTom in this price range, it was obvious that this Garmin was my only option unless I wanted to spend over £200 which I did not.
It is basically a case of a lesser of two evils, like voting in elections.
