I have used it once, only got it the other day. But, I have no problem with it, it will cook plenty of chips. For one person this is fine, although I could get carried away with the amount I use. I do not put the lid down as the window steams up anyway, so you would have to keep wiping it, and I do not like to keep a lid down on hot oil.
It is a lovely size for me and my kitchen and does look cute sitting on the worktop. Cooking time is no longer than any other machine or chip pan. It does say not to use lard or solid fats which is a pity as I like cooking with lard also way much cheaper than oil. I may give lard a go and keep my fingers crossed.
All in all a nice machine that does the job and I am well pleased with it.

We previously had the Tefal FF220040 (ASIN: B01LY9WA0L) which was great, but perhaps a bit too small. This has a larger capacity by half a litre.

First impressions: this was the cheapest most nasty electrical appliance I’ve ever bought. lol. Everything about it reeks budget and a lack of quality and care. It makes the Tefal feel like it was designed and built by master engineers and craftsmen.

By illustration, the basket is so fragile that it bends with the slightest touch. The Tefal basket is built like a tank. The Swan’s (the non-removable) lid wobbles from side to side like it’s held on by fairy wishes. The Tefal’s is removable for cleaning and feels solid.

The only element that is comparable is the rotary temperature control, which is vaguely accurate on both deep fat fryers.

At the time of purchase, a mere £21.99, we decided to keep the Swan. It’s not worth any more than that. We decided to keep it, because it does do the job.

One final point. Some reviews indicated that it never reached the correct temperature. Having set the temperature to 190c and using a cooking thermostat probe, the probe registered 200c before giving up. So 190c easily means 200C+. Something worth keeping an eye on.

Update on temperatures. On our fryer:

    Setting of 150c: actually 120c.
    Setting of 170c: actually 190c.
    Setting of 200c: actually 200c+.

The basket is 6 inches by 6 inches wide, 3.5 inches deep.
It’s literally only big enough for one person.
Won’t fit a long piece standard piece of battered cod. Those Gastro ones for instance. It’ll fit a small batch of chips, chicken tenders and a few onion rings. Not that big at all. Perfect if you don’t eat much and don’t want to spend alot on oil. I got this fat fryer, because I crave good old fashioned fried foods. Air fryers are good but sometimes a bit of grease doesn’t hurt!!!!
I’ve used this 3 times now and I forgot how good deep fat fryers are, since I’ve been using an air fryer for so long …but I doubt I’ll ever cook chips, wedges or chicken strips in an air fryer again.

It is better designed than the Russell Hobbs one that I had to return which was double the price.

This one is sturdy and is easy to clean. I keep the lid down on mine while cooking, checking every few minutes and it’s been fine. It does get condensation, but it helps filter the grease and keep it off the walls and tile.. I don’t wanna look up at my walls and tiles in a month and see a layer of grease. I also put my cooker hood on full. I don’t have windows in my kitchen so it’s a must in my situation.

You won’t find a deep fat fryer where the main bowl comes out, not for under £100+ quid. This is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.

It will fit in any small kitchen. On the side or in a cupboard. It holds about 1.2 litres of oil. There’s a min and max line so you know. I bought Canola oil from Amazon. Sunflower, vegetable, rapeseed or peanut oil will work too. You can’t use lard, but who would want to??!!

I like it so far. If you are scrolling trying to figure out which deep fat fryer to buy. You’ll see that there’s only about 3 designs. All taken by different companies. This square Swan one was a good deal at £23.

If it’s just for you or for a friend on their own. I definitely recommend this design.

Hope this helps! Remember to wipe the tiles down after use, coz grease will build up on the walls quick. Best used under a cooker hood if you can.

    Enjoy!

Does take a good 5-10 mins to heat the oil up to 170, and as it says on the front of the item, tool 9 mins to fry some chips. Cooked to perfection. I downgraded from an expensive tefal fryer, so it felt slow when using this, but works fine. Build quality, the lid is a little loose on the hinge, everything else is solid. Can’t go wrong for £30!
